We took the red eye into New York, arriving at an uncivilized 7:00am local time, all punch drunk from lack of sleep. Naps were there first order of business.
A couple hours later we met up with Barb and her Beau, Ben (say that 5 times fast) in Williamsburg where we would spend the next few hours eating our our way through food vendors galore at Smorgasburg.
Smorgasburg operates year round, every Saturday and Sunday in Williamsburg, alternating with a Vintage Flea Market. There are dozens of food vendors carrying everything from artisan ice pops, to lobster rolls, chicken and waffles, bruschetta, pastries and pork cooked every way possible. This is the place where some Chef Keizo Shimamoto's debuted the Umami Ramen Burger in August 2013. We eyeballed the real deal and were completely surprised at how small it was! It was a mere third of the one we made. Photos can be so deceiving. Clearly the people who took the reference photos had very small hands ;)
A highlight for me was having an apple pie iced pop from People's Pops. The flavour of the pop was bright and vibrant - a cross between fresh baked apple pie and cold crisp apple cider. As the sun beat down on this Vancouver Lotus, I appreciated having something cold and refreshing. This is something I was going to make at home for sure.
John had an opportunity to try Blue Bottle Coffee - a coffee shop he's seen on Pinterest and on Coffee Blogs. Even Barb and Ben, with dietary restrictions were able to find plenty of things to excite them. As expected, everyone left very full and content.
This was one of the highlights of my trip to New York and reminded me of the Richmond Night Market, except it's during the day, the food is western, and instead of knock off or cheap stuff from asia, it's vintage collectibles like records and cutting boards.
A highlight for me was having the Maine Lobster Roll by Red Hook Lobster Pound.
Fresh-picked Maine lobster meat. Maine style served cold with celery, spices, and a touch of homemade mayo, Connecticut style with warm luscious lobster slathered in butter or Tuscan style tossed in basil vinaigrette on a bed of spring greens all served on a top split bun -- the one and only bread choice for an authentic maine lobster roll.
It wasn't until after I had my mind blowing lobster roll that I learned truck was named the Best in America and is featured by the New York Times, and Zagat. Other dishes served were Lobster BLTs, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Lobster Nicoise Salad, and whoopie pies. Highly enjoyable!
